Most students on the EngD programme are funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
In general the criteria for EPSRC funding require a connection with the UK that enables indefinite right to reside in the UK.
The EngD programme is not available to non-EU nationals, as the structure of the programme (with work placements outwith the university) does not comply with the regulations set by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) for obtaining the necessary visa.
EPSRC Funding is available as follows:
- For UK nationals, full funding of fees and stipend is provided.
For non-UK nationals of European Union countries:
- In general, only fees are paid, however for a small number of exceptional candidates, stipends may also be available for some projects.
- Full fees and stipend may also be available for candidates who meet the EPSRC criteria for having recently resided in the UK.
Due to the large number of speculative applications we receive, we cannot guarantee to respond to informal enquiries where the funding eligibility is unclear.
The CDT in Applied Photonics is committed to its EU students, staff and research partners. We want to reassure European applicants for the September 2018/19 intake to our programme that there has so far been no change to the funding of our programme and we will continue to support our EU students for the duration of their study. If you have any concerns, please contact the CDT office.
